Season 2020, the Girls and Women of Northbridge FC

When Covid-19 took hold in early 2020 no one could have predicted the impact it would have on football. Cancelled trainings, games and ultimately the season saw play came to a grinding halt. So, when to the relief of the whole footballing community players got back on the field, they did so facing unique physical and mental challenges.

It was in the face of these challenges that the girls and women of Northbridge Football Club truly shone, and while it was the individual and team accolades that captured headlines, it was the intangibles like perseverance, professionalism and team work that were the true highlights of the season.

Across the NPL program, and in particular at the senior women’s level it was a cultural shift from the season prior that was the driver of success, from existing players to new recruits the focus was on professionalism, respecting the badge, and perseverance under COVID-19 restrictions.

The results spoke for them self, with both 1st and Reserve Grade going the season undefeated, with 1st Grade going onto a comprehensive 5-0 thumping of Marconi Stallions to claim Grand Final glory and secure the club championship.

“…we needed to recruit talent, but what was more important was the calibre of the human being both on and off the pitch, we wanted role models”

Bill Pappas

Individual success also followed with Evelyn Chronis capping off her Grand Final win as the competition’s leading goal scorer and crowned player of the year. Evelyn has since been rewarded for an outstanding season with a contract with W-League club the Newcastle Jets.

Across the Community and Academy programs, some outstanding team and individual performances were a feature of season 2020, while the Women in Football week was a wonderful celebration of the girls and women that put so much into the Northbridge Football Club.

Across the Community program it was the U12C Ninjas and U14B Flaming Chillies who came away with premiership glory, while in the seniors it was the All-Age Division 2 women who flew the flag proudly for the club.

Individual success also came to U14B Flaming Chillies Isabella Bonaccorso whole took home the Max Meyer trophy for Academy/Community boys/girls U12-U18 top goal scorer.

And while the All-Age Premier League team fell short of what would have been an incredible sixth straight premiership, their dominance over many years must be recognised as no mean feat. No doubt they will be looking to reclaim that dominance in 2021. Despite the loss, individual success came to Ella Boudakin, taking home the Gold Boot award with 17 goals for the season. Well done Ella!

On the Academy side, it was the U18 Reds of the the Diamond League who flew the premiership flag for Northbridge FC. One of the many highlights of the season for the girls were the hard fought, season defining derby’s against intra club rivals the U18 Whites.

In an exciting addition to the Academy set up was the introduction of the first ever girls U8 team, providing a pathway for young girls into the NSFA Sapphire and Diamond Leagues along with the NPL GSAP competition.

Finally, 2020 saw an incredible celebration of the girls and women of Northbridge FC as part of Female Football Week by recognising players, teams, coaches and officials alike through a number of events and media activity.

“…Girls’ Skills Clinic was a fantastic way to celebrate Female Football Week, providing an opportunity for girls to participate in and showcase their abilities to be part of the up-and-coming successful generation of female football players.”

Hannah Johns

The week culminated in Purple Hair Ribbon round that saw some tough, skill full and above all exciting games of football. You can check out the week in pictures here

While just a snippet from all the highlights of season 2020, it no doubts makes for an exciting 2021.
